With thousands of Athenians headed down to Florida this weekend, we asked Athens writer, Jacksonville native and Flagpole Senior Jean Shorts Correspondent Joe VanHoose to fill us in on what to do down there besides tailgate. His opinions—specifically that Athens is not the the greatest city in the Southeast—do not reflect the opinions of Flagpole Magazine.
If you're headed to Nashville to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the UGA-Vandy game this weekend, your time in Music City just potentially got a whole lot cooler.
Les Miles and No. 6 LSU come to Athens having won the last two against No. 9 Georgia, including an SEC Championship Game rout in 2011. Pundits are predicting an uncomfortably close game, with the home team a slight favorite.
The big story of the week, of course, is the return of LSU QB Zack Mettenberger to Athens. Mettenberger, a former Dawg, was in a starting quarterback battle with Aaron Murray (and the oft-forgotten Logan Gray) back in spring 2010, before an out-of-town incident at a bar got him kicked off the team. Interestingly enough, Mettenberger's mother is a UGA football employee (though Mark Richt reportedly gave her the week off.)
Both teams look good as far as injuries go. Star running back Todd Gurley should be at 100 percent and ready to put up big numbers against a solid-but-exploitable LSU defense. It's Georgia's third top-10 matchup of the season so far; the Dawgs are 1–1 in those games and looking to improve.

Workers were setting up the ESPN "College GameDay" stage in Myers Quad today for what promises to be an absolutely insane football Saturday against LSU. (Pro tip: Unless you're going tailgating or to the game or to a bar to watch the game, DO NOT, under any circumstances, leave your house tomorrow.)
Gabe Vodicka and I had a chance to talk this morning with ESPN personality Paul Finebaum (whose intelligent and caustic Birmingham Post-Herald columns I grew up reading). Here are his thoughts on Georgia fans, the Dawgs' title chances, Mark Richt, Michael Adams and whether UGA fans should boo Zach Mettenberger.
Get those signs ready, hooligans: ESPN's flagship college football program, "College GameDay," will broadcast from Athens this Saturday, Sept. 28. starting at 9 a.m. No. 9 Georgia takes on No. 6 LSU at Sanford Stadium at 3:30 p.m. that afternoon.
The show, which features talking heads Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and former Georgia linebacker David Pollack, is a network staple known primarily for its feature wherein the hosts (and often a celebrity guest) predict the outcomes of the day's games. For the final segment, which previews the day's marquee matchup, Corso famously dons the head of the mascot from whichever team he predicts will win.
Steve Spurrier and South Carolina come into Athens today ranked sixth in the country and hoping to win their fourth straight against the Dawgs. Georgia looks to bounce back after a tough loss to Clemson last week, a game in which star running back Todd Gurley strained a quad muscle (and WR Malcolm Mitchell was lost for the season with a celebration-related injury). However, all signs point toward Gurley being available to play in today's matchup.
After the jump, follow along as we live blog the action, and feel free to weigh in in the comments.
Destruction of the Clemson Tigers, that is. AMIRITE?
Some of us over here on Foundry Street are pretty damn pumped for this Saturday's Georgia-Clemson matchup. To further fan the flames of our fandom, ESPN has been playing the commercial below as a trailer of sorts for the game.
Flagpole is going to be experimenting with a little football coverage this fall. Gabe Vodicka and I went down to Butts-Mehre (huh huh) today to talk to Coach Mark Richt and a few of the players, among them Chris Conley, a junior wide receiver who's also writing an Athens Diet column for us later this month.
Pete McCommons laughed maniacally as he handed me his NCAA Tournament brack for our office pool. (Of course, no money is at stake. Why, gambling is illegal! The prizes are a handful of kazoos left over from some Music Tapes show and an unclaimed bottle of sriracha in the fridge.)
