Alt-country band Futurebirds has teamed up with beloved Athens-based coffee roaster Jittery Joe's to release "Baba Java," the first release in what's purported to be a line of "Athens music coffee." The collaboration between the band and the coffeemaker was inspired by a famous local performance, according to the press release:
Atlanta alt-rock powerhouse Manchester Orchestra plays the Georgia Theatre Wednesday, Aug. 6, in support of its recently released LP Cope. (See this week's Flagpole for a feature story on the band.)
We're teaming up with the Georgia Theatre to give away a pair of tickets to the show, as well as dinner for two at the Branded Butcher's restaurant on the GATH rooftop. To enter, tell us in the comments below why YOU deserve the prize. We'll choose a winner Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Athens may be a little behind Atlanta when it comes to artisanal foods, but we're working on it, and here's the next step. Nicholas Dale, along with brother and The National chef-owner Peter Dale, plans to open Condor Chocolates in the Five Points space next to J. Christopher's sometime this fall.
Several national hip hop heavyweights will play UGA's Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday. Aug. 23 as part of what is being billed as a "Back 2 School Jam."
Ah, the old 6–8 p.m. rave. From the mailbox:
It seemed like we took a little breather in June from the cavalcade of food events, but now they're ramping up again. Here's some of what's coming up over the next month:
The occasionally maligned discount transit company Megabus will offer service from Athens to Charlotte, NC, Richmond, VA, and Washington, DC starting Sept. 10.
News came in this morning that Cibo Matto, the inscrutable New York-based indie-pop group that came to prominence in the mid-'90s before staying quiet through much of the early part of this century, re-forming in 2011 and finally releasing a new studio LP earlier this year, will headline this year's Athens Intensified festival.
Kyle Kinane is no stranger to Athens, having performed here several times over the course of the last few years. So it came as no shock (though it's still pretty damn cool news) when the hirsute, gruff-voiced comedian announced on his Tumblr that he will record a new television special at the 40 Watt Club later this summer.
Is your sauce the boss? The second annual Classic City BBQ Festival is now taking applications.
The festival, which drew 4,000 people last year, will be held Aug. 15–16 at the Classic Center and will feature barbecue contests, barbecue restaurant vendors, outdoor music, a classic car show and a tailgating trade show.
