In the Loop: AADM Hosts Town Hall Meeting Thursday on Community Policing and Race Relations

Athens-Clarke County police held a cookout in the Columbia Brookside neighborhood off Hawthorne Avenue last week. Under Chief Scott Freeman, the department has held occasional cookouts as a way to improve relationships between police and local communities.

The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement will host a town hall meeting on community policing and race relations at the Athens-Clarke County library from 5:30–7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Co-founder Mokah-Jasmine Johnson said that residents and community leaders are concerned that ACC police aren't doing enough to build trust and ensure safety in the wake of two recent incidents—an officer who hit a fleeing suspect with his car in June, and another officer who tackled a 10-year-old boy in July.

In the Loop: Discrepancies in Voter Info Will Be Corrected, Election Supervisor Says

An astute reader noted the other day that her voting location listed on the secretary of state's website did not match up with the one listed on the Athens-Clarke County Board of Election's interactive precinct map.

Given Secretary of State Brian Kemp's well-documented voter suppression efforts and lack of security in the system, this was cause for concern.

Further investigation found at least two other discrepancies between the Board of Election's map and its list of polling places.

Charlotte Sosebee, director of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections, told Flagpole that the map has taken a long time to update, and those discrepancies will be resolved by the middle of next week. In the meantime, here is the correct information:

It won't be available for another two weeks, but you can go ahead and get your ticket tomorrow for the release of Creature Comfort's latest limited-edition cellar beer.

Arcadiania is a saison that was originally released in 2015, but this time, it has a twist: The latest verson was aged in wine barrels from Yonah Mountain Vineyards, located in Cleveland, about an hour and a half up Highway 129 from Athens. Combined with American hops and Creature Comfort's house yeast culture, the barrel aging imparts citrus and berry notes to the tart saison.

$60 tickets to the July 21 release party can be bought here and come with 36 ounces of draft samples, food pairings, stemware, two 750-milliliter bottles of Arcadiana and the opportunity to purchase more.

Local nonprofit 86 Hate is hosting a pop-up dinner/benefit tonight (Monday, June 18) at 7 p.m. at The Old Pal, which is also launching its summer cocktail menu. 86 Hate focuses on helping service industry workers in Athens advocate for their rights, fight sexual assault and sexual harassment, deal with mental health issues and more. This pop-up specifically raises money for the organization's efforts to support service workers dealing with sexual assault and harassment in the workplace. Chef Garrett MacFalda (of Heirloom) is offering six small plates of local produce and ingredients priced at $7–$12.

In the Loop: Today Is the Last Day to Register to Vote May 22

Today (Tuesday, Apr. 24) is the last day to register to vote in the May 22 partisan primaries and nonpartisan local elections.

Local races will be decided May 22 or in a July runoff and will not be on the ballot in November. They include Athens-Clarke County mayor, commission districts 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9, school board districts 5 and 7 and two seats on the Superior Court bench.

In addition, Democratic and Republican primaries for governor and other statewide offices, as well as Congress, are on the ballot locally.
