Grub Notes: 1000 Faces to Open New Location Downtown Next Monday

Back in May, we reported on local coffee roaster 1000 Faces' plans to renovate and move into the building at 510 N. Thomas St. downtown that used to house Good Dirt. Work has moved along fairly quickly, and although 1000 Faces didn't meet its original goal of being open by September, the space is looking good, and it'll begin serving coffee next Monday, Nov. 13, with a soft-open week.

In the Loop: Forums Scheduled for Athens State House Races

Civic and political groups have scheduled several forums in Athens and Oconee County over the next month for voters to hear from candidates running for two open state House of Representatives seats.

On Thursday, the Oconee County Republican Party will host three or possibly all four of the GOP candidates running for those seats. District 117 candidate Houston Gaines and District 119 candidates Tom Lord and Marcus Wiedower have confirmed they will attend, while fellow District 119 candidate Steven Strickland is trying to rearrange his schedule, according to Oconee County journalist Lee Becker. The forum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce.

Jonathan Wallace, who's running as a Democrat in District 119, will officially kick off his campaign with a rally at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Oconee County Courthouse:

Grub Notes: Akademia Brewing Co. Has an Opening Date Set, and More Food Events

Akademia Brewing Co. has been hard at work for a while on its beers (which it was making at Southern Brewing Co.) and its building, the former Musician's Warehouse by what is now the Atlanta Highway Goodwill. (Technically, the address is 150 Crane Dr.) The original projected date for opening was "late summer," and these days, mid-October totally counts.

Although Josh Aaron of the Savory Spoon is no longer on board (he's cooking at Chops & Hops, in Watkinsville), Akademia will still have a restaurant as well as its beer. Opening day is Monday, Oct. 16, and more updates should be posted on the Facebook event.

Grub Notes: Creature Comforts Releases New IPA and More Athens Beer News

Creature Comfort's latest small-batch brew, an IPA called Crescendo, will be released at its tasting room tonight on draft and Friday in four-packs of 16-ounce cans.

The brewery describes Crescendo as "a slightly hazy IPA with notes of honeydew, white peach skin, pineapple, and orange" from the El Dorado, Galaxy and Grungeist hops. It's 7.2% ABV.

White supremacist and neo-Nazi protestors in Charlottesville, VA

Local progressive groups have scheduled two events—one this evening and one tomorrow—related to the white supremacist riot in Charlottesville, VA last weekend.

A candelight vigil from 5:30–7 p.m. today at the Arch is billed as both in solidary with Charlottesville and a call to action to defend undocumented immigrants and oppose the repeal of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Wednesday at 6 p.m., the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement will host a "community conversation" about Charlottesville—including, specifically, whether Athens' Confederate memorial on Broad Street should remain standing.
