Culture Briefs: Community Will Move to a New Location this Summer

Local fashion boutique Community officially announced plans this afternoon to relocate to a new space at the end of June. Currently located downtown at 119 N. Jackson St. above Jittery Joe's, the shop will move across the street into 260 N. Jackson St., the former home of the recently shuttered Jackson Street Books. The shop plans to carry out business as usual in its current location while renovations are underway.

The thing you notice first about Austin’s South by Southwest in its metropolis-spanning current form is the jarring degree to which it is branded. Nearly everything is brought to you by some commercial entity or another. One gets the sense that this is what America will look like under President Trump: entire cities as living billboards, naming rights to public property sold to the highest bidder, every inch of real estate emblazoned with some lifestyle website’s logo.

Athens-Clarke County won’t prosecute local brewery Creature Comforts for allegedly violating the state law regulating brewery tours, the county attorney’s office announced earlier this week.

In February, an undercover officer acting on a tip and posing as a service industry employee on “industry night,” a monthly event where service industry workers receive free tours (and beers), reported that she was given free beers and never offered a tour, nor did she see a tour being conducted.

Oconee County commissioners voted In May of 2014 to move $2 million out of the water and sewer account in the 2009 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax at a time when the county’s Utility Department desperately needed money for maintenance and expansion of its two wastewater treatment facilities.
