Over the course of its several-year existence, Athens-based "Amerigrass" project Grassland String Band has evolved from a straightahead bluegrass outfit into something more nuanced and compelling. The transition is solidified with the group's new EP, The Echo Mountain Sessions, recorded in Asheville, NC last January.
Today we're pleased to premiere "Diamond," the first single from the upcoming EP. The song, which features contributions from Hammond B3 master Ike Stubblefield, was penned by GSB's Michael Lesousky.
Athens musician JJ Posway fronts the emo-tinged indie-pop outfit scooterbabe and creates dark, textural instrumental music as Aprotag. Now Posway has a third project, the electronic-minded Orca Mug, and today we're happy to premiere the title track from Orca Mug's upcoming EP, Yeah, The Void.
In February, Athens electropop duo Powerkompany released Fever and Chills, a lush, propulsive follow-up to 2013's I Am More Than This. Today, we're happy to premiere the video for "Like," the album's delicate yet daring seventh track.
Athens-based indie hip hop artist Marshall Moore retired his Hairy Confucius moniker last December, but fret not: Moore is back as The Quiet Pack, and today we're happy to premiere the project's first single, the jazzy, understated "Meet Me On the Astral Plane."
Alt-country troubadour Scott Low has deep Athens music ties, as the former frontman of Efren and Scott Low & the Southern Bouillon. Currently, Low is prepping the release of The New Vintage, a solo record that's out June 17 via South Carolina imprint 10 Foot Woody Records.
Today, we're pleased to premiere the album's second single, the boisterous, somewhat menacing "Body Bag." Stream it below:
One of the most dynamic performers in Athens' hip hop scene, Eugene Willis, akaBlacknerdninja, is rightly lauded for his live show. But if "Yea Right," the first single from Willis' upcoming album, is any indication, he's stepping his game up in the recording department, too.
Today we're excited to premiere the video for "Yea Right," which you can watch below:
Flagpole favorites Dead Neighbors are still riding high on the strength of last year's excellent self-titled cassette (which landed at No. 6 on our best-of-2015 list). Today we're pleased to premiere the music video for "Tell," one of the record's standout tunes.
Athens pop-punk miscreants Meth Wax have just released their self-titled debut, a 12-track burner that you should really go check out, now.
Good. Now that you're back, how about taking a look at the brand new video for "Goodbye," the album's closing track?
Patrick Brick, the songwriter behind Athens-based one-man electro-pop project Futo, is prepping a new LP, Futo's Greatest Hits. The follow-up to last year's Flagpole fave I Wish I Had Been Born as the Rain That Forms Rivers That Carve Out Canyons will drop Apr. 20.
In 2014, Pylon leader Vanessa Briscoe Hay got the idea to assemble a crack cast of Athens musicians to pay tribute to the music of her legendary new wave band. The group, dubbed the Pylon Reenactment Society, played once that year as part of the inaugural Art Rocks Athens event, then again for the 2015 edition.
Now the band—Jason NeSmith, Kay Stanton, Damon Denton, Joe Rowe and Hay—is embarking on a mini-tour alongside E6 associates Dressy Bessy. The two groups will play the 40 Watt this Saturday, Feb. 20. (Check out this week's feature on the PRS here.)
Today we're pleased to premiere the live video for "Beep," filmed at last year's ARA. Check out the clip, produced by the Art Rocks Athens Foundation, below:
