In the Loop: Watch Stephen Colbert Skewer Athens Congressional Candidate Jody Hice

In Athens, voters are used to being embarrassed by their current congressman, Paul Broun. Now our future congressman, Jody Hice, is drawing national ridicule.

Stephen Colbert devoted a segment to Hice last night, noting that he has compared being gay to alcoholism, said women can enter politics "if they're within the authority of their husband," and believes Muslims don't deserve First Amendment rights.

"Muslims don't deserve freedom of speech," Colbert joshed. "They'd just use it to offend women and gay people, and Jody Hice has already got that covered."

In the Loop: The Pulaski Greenway Is Now Open

Athens-Clarke County officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning for the newPulaski Creek Greenway.

The concrete path—funded by $984,308 from SPLOST 2005—connects the Athens Community Council on Aging, on Hoyt Street off College Avenue, and Pulaski Street near the Leathers Building.

Via the Oconee School of Rock's Facebook page, here's a photo of R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry, who stopped by Full Moon Studio in Watkinsville today to jam out with the campers.

The OSOR's final performance, where the kids who attended this week's camp will show off their stuff, is tomorrow (Saturday, July 12) at 6 p.m. at Full Moon. It's free and open to the public.

For months, UGA wide receiver Chris Conley has been working on a Star Wars fan film with a cast and crew of friends and fans. In April, we showed you the trailer for Retribution, and now you can finally see the full results of Conley's hard work.

Below, watch the 26-minute short, which was shot on and around the UGA campus and features cameos from some recognizable local faces. It is ridiculous and nerdy and slick and basically the best thing ever.

Culture Briefs: Watch This Documentary About the Civil Rights Movement in Athens

The Varsity was the site of many civil rights protests in the 1960s.

Most people know the story of how Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter integrated the University of Georgia in 1961.

But fewer people know the tale of how Holmes and Hunter inspired a generation of Athens high school students—Robert Harrison, Charlie Maddox, Ken Dious, Carolyn Turner, Ed Turner, Bennie McKinley and Shirley Taylor, among others—to fight segregation at another local landmark.

A new, short documentary, produced by Athens native Nicole Taylor (now of Brooklyn) for the Southern Foodways Alliance, focuses on how young black Athenians integrated the Varsity.
