Comedian Doug Benson, known and beloved for his marijuana-obsessed podcasts, movies and stand-up, performs Saturday evening at the Morton Theatre as part of this year's Slingshot Festival (read our feature on that happening, which includes a short profile of Benson, here).

Do you regularly make the drive out to Umaido in Suwanee just to get a bowl o' ramen? Do you wait all week just to see if Pulaski Heights BBQ is doing ramen on special? Did the news of Five & Ten's Tuesday-night ramen pop-up fill you with joy? Oh, and also, shouldn't you be contributing more to charity?
Even if the answers to all of those questions aren't "yes," you should for sure invest your $35 for a ticket to this Saturday's Ramen Bowl at Ciné, organized by André Gallant of the Athens Banner-Herald and benefiting United Way.

So, there I was, just sitting at my desk working in a rare moment of daytime word-wrangling—most of my writing is done at night—and the phone rang. The caller ID indicated the call was from New York, so instead of letting it slide to voicemail I answered. Who knew? Coulda been Hova.
"Hello, Gordon?" a voice said. "Yes," I answered. "Hey, man," came the response. "This is Paul Collins."

Food 2 Kids, the Athens chapter of The Links, Inc. and the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia are hosting a Zumba-Thon from 4–7 p.m. The price of admission is a book bag with school supplies that will be filled with non-perishable food and distributed to local students in need.
Friday and Saturday evenings, the 40 Watt Club will host a tribute to recently departed songwriter and Velvet Underground founder Lou Reed featuring 18 local bands, each of whom will play two or three Reed-penned tunes of their choosing. Proceeds from the event will benefit AIDS Athens and the MAC AIDS Fund. Read our calendar pick here.
Reed tribute concerts have been happening all over the country of late, but the Athens event has a pretty neat-o distinction, in that two of the offspring of Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker—Richard and Kate Mikulka—will perform. (The former is a member of local rock outfit Pilgrim, and the latter blows the baritone sax in indie-soul group The HEAP.)

The Classic Center's new ice skating rink opens Saturday for a week-long sneak preview. Here's the 411:
Right in time to hear the recent release of R. Kelly's 12th solo studio album, Black Panties, The World Famous is hosting "The R. Kelly mansion room by room. DJ Quincy (John Swint of Modern Skirts) will provide a special R. Kelly-themed set, and chapters of the infamous "Trapped in the Closet" rap opera will be screened throughout the night.
