After a bit of stop-and-start in construction, Atlanta's Grindhouse Killer Burgers will open on Lumpkin Street tomorrow (Friday the 13th—no coincidence).
The small chain, owned by a perfectionist who spent crazy amounts of time finding exactly the right buns to serve when he opened his original location in the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, focuses on simplicity rather than excess, with burgers that are manageable, not huge, and made with care.
In addition to all the other food craziness hitting Athens tomorrow (Harry's opening at 9 a.m., The World Famous offering a tailgate breakfast starting at 8 a.m., Herschel's taking reservations), Fatburger, the West Coast burger chain, will be handing out free burgers and Coke Zero™ at both Walmarts tomorrow.
1. Football. Football, football, football. UGA vs. South Carolina kicks off from Sanford Stadium at 4:30 p.m. Saturday on ESPN. (Also, read UGA wide receiver Chris Conley's Athens Diet column.)
2. The Rivalry Music Festival, featuring Wiz Khalifa, Savoy, Reptar and many more, takes over the Spring Valley Eco Farm all Friday long.
On Tuesday, Echo, the vegan restaurant that took over the Washington Street space recently vacated by Farm 255, opened for business. Among the questions surrounding the transition was whether the new restaurant would continue Farm's tradition of hosting late-night live music and, more specifically, whether the new owners would keep Mercer West, who has been responsible for assembling some of the most interesting bills in Athens over the past near-decade, on as talent buyer.

It took me six hours to come up with that headline.
I'm merging into day two of Dragon Con, and it's fair to say that my thought process has become non-existent. I'm surviving solely on my nerd instincts and a truck load of vanilla lattes.
It's hard to believe that I've been here a mere 63 hours (yes, I had to count that on my fingers). And only seven of those hours could be considered "down time." For those who've never been to Dragon Con, it's a well known fact that there's no sleeping at the Con—just trust me, there isn't. As I write this, it's 5:49 in the morning.

Every year for nine years, I've been going to this massive nerd gathering in Atlanta.
Also known as Dragon Con, the all-encompassing sci-fi/fantasy convention, it is an experience like no other. While I've written many words on the subject, I still find it difficult to accurately describe — it feels like home.
If you're looking for a party mix to throw on the stereo this Labor Day weekend, you could do a lot worse than the new one from local producer ChamberMusic, which you can stream below:
1. You should probably go see the Coathangers at Green Room on Friday.
2. Or, you could check out OCAF's "Georgia Pottery Invitational" opening gala.
3. Georgia's football season kicks off Saturday evening against Clemson. Watch that shit.
Flagpole news intern extraordinaire David Schick will be blogging from the massive sci-fi/horror/fantasy convention in Atlanta. Yes, there will be cosplay photos.
If you’re following his output closely, you might get the impression that Patterson Hood from Drive-By Truckers will sleep when he’s dead. In addition to writing reflective essays about how growing up in the South influenced the band’s Southern Rock Opera, playing solo shows around the country, writing songs to protect downtown Athens from a Walmart eye-sore, and blazing through recording sessions with fellow Athenian David Barbe at the helm, Hood stays awfully busy.
Hood might not have a lot of free time on his hands, but he and his band have managed to squeeze in their annual August appearances at the Georgia Theatre this weekend. They’ll be joined Friday by Tuscaloosa-based rockers the Dexateens and on Saturday by Fly Golden Eagle, stationed out of Nashville.
Although Hood is perhaps the most public and vocal member of the band, DBT has long functioned as a unit that extends beyond those who hold instruments during recording sessions and on tour. Hood is grateful for the contributions that have made the band a success, both in Athens and around the globe.
