Grub Notes: The Pine Is Expanding, Baxter Is Getting More Pizza and More Restaurant News

The Pine.

The Pine, in Five Points, is adding a downstairs bar called The Root, which will open in August. Co-owner Scott Parrish said it will be open seven days a week, until midnight Sunday–Wednesday and until 1 a.m. Thursday–Saturday. Unlike the upstairs, it won't serve food, but it will have "a tap and can list, a handful of wines and craft cocktails and a sizable whiskey selection," said Parrish.

Piedmont College's Cafe on Prince, which has been serving up good Southern cooking, cafeteria style, for some time now, will close after today, as Pete reported in Pub Notes. The college intends to repurpose the space for academics, which is understandable, even if a loss to good fried chicken.

Grub Notes: Athens Farmers Market Starts Up Again Saturday, More Markets Opening Soon

Spring has sprung like a mofo all over the place, which means it's time for farmers markets to get going. Athens Farmers Market (which also has a snazzy new website) will kick off its ninth season Saturday, Apr. 2 at 8 a.m. at Bishop Park, where it will be under the covered pavilion, removing one more of your excuses for not going. The Fresh Food Bus, which provides free transportation to the market, is returning, but the schedule is TBA.

Grub Notes: Apps & Taps Invitational is May 7 and Lots More Food Events

My Athens is collaborating with the Twilight Criterium to organize the Apps & Taps Invitational, a craft-beer event, May 7 from noon–4 p.m. Six tents on Washington Street downtown will host 24 craft breweries plus food from six local restaurants.

Breweries confirmed so far are: Avery, Anderson Valley, Bell's, Coastal Empire, Copper Creek, Creature Comforts, Dogfish Head, Duck Rabbit, Founder's, Left Hand, Orpheus, Oskar Blues, Service Brewing Company, Southern Brewing Company, Terrapin, Three Taverns, 21st Amendment, Westbrook and Wild Heaven.

After a bit of a delay (the original date was August), the Athens location of Fatburger, the national chain based in California, is open in the Beechwood shopping center, inside Buffalo's, its sister operation. It's the only Fatburger currently open in the state of Georgia; locations in Atlanta and Marietta did exist but closed.

Beef O'Brady's will hold its annual wings-eating contest during the halftime of the Super Bowl, on Sunday, if you're more interested in chicken than in Beyonce. Wings are "nuclear"-flavored, the charge is $12 (except for the first three entrants, who get to compete for free) and the winner gets free wings for a year.

There's a benefit dinner this Sunday at 5 p.m. at The Foundry, with the chef lending his culinary presence, plusmusic by 6 String Drag. The menu consists of: a salad of little gem lettuces, pistachio, mint, lemon and olive; a family-style main course with trout, rack of lamb, leeks, farro with Brussels sprouts and pumpkin seeds, and the roasted carrot and beet salad with cumin dressing that is a personal favorite of mine from Acheson's first cookbook; and a butternut squash panna cotta for dessert.

Breaking news, y’all: Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and a lot of stuff is going to be closed.

Athens-Clarke County’s trash and recycling pickup schedule has changed. Buses are running on a holiday schedule this week and will be shut down entirely tomorrow. Parks are closed Thursday and Friday. Click here for details.

UGA buses are running on an intercession schedule today, then will not run again until Monday.

If the dog eats your turkey and you find yourself looking for some non-Waffle House food options—or if you just need to get a drink and get away from your relatives—look no further.

Mediterranean Grill

Mediterranean Grill, the small chain out of Atlanta, is open on Lumpkin, in the former YoBo Cantina space.

Lighthouse Seafood, which was running a nice little seafood market with delicious steamed to-go orders on Gaines School Road, has closed in Athens, opening a proper bar and grill at 2077 Atlanta Hwy., in Statham.

Kumquat Mae will no longer serve dinner effective Oct. 20, "due to the high demand [for] our catering services and weekend pop-up dinners," according to owner Tracey Stewart. The Mitchell Bridge Road restaurant will continue serving breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Sunday, 7 a.m.–4 p.m. (The bar is open until 7 p.m.)

Taqueria Tsunami's second Athens location, in the former Herschel's on East Clayton Street, is officially open, meaning you can give your sales tax dollars to Clarke County when you eat there. Kids eat free on Tuesdays.

Little City Diner, in Winterville, starts serving Friday-night dinners tonight, until 8:30 p.m.
