Buck yeah! Yesterday, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck announced via the band's site that he's got a new solo record on the way. Warzone Earth is out Oct. 16 via Portland, OR-based Mississippi Records, and folks will be able to pre-order the vinyl-only release here.

Today marks the official reissue release of Weirdo, the 1994 classic from Athens-based underdog rockers Five Eight. A spry, 11-track album, Weirdo represents a would-be alt-rock breakthrough that never quite came.
The Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood wrote an essay for the upcoming New York Times Magazine, published online today, about Southern heritage and the Confederate flag, which has been the topic of much debate since white supremacist Dylann Roof allegedly murdered nine black churchgoers in Charleston, SC. It's well worth your time.
Hood grew up in a progressive family in Muscle Shoals, AL, a city where the white South’s conservatism was somewhat tempered by the dozens of legendary African American musicians like Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett who recorded music there.

Nuci's Space has begun construction on the St. Mary's steeple, a project Flagpole reported on last November, and which was partially funded via an IndieGoGo campaign. As you might expect, media attention has once again been focused on the structure, which famously marks the site of R.E.M.'s first-ever public performance in April 1980.
AthFest has revealed the final track listing for the 2015 edition of its annual compilation album.
Assembled and produced by students in UGA's Music Business Program, and released by Ghostmeat Records, the 21-track record features songs from established local favorites The Whigs, T. Hardy Morris and Reptar, as well as upstarts Roadkill Ghost Choir, Monsoon, New Wives and others.
For its annual compilation album, AthFest is doing things a little differently this time around.
Last month, we brought you the news that local pop princes Reptar had signed to Joyful Noise Recordings for their upcoming second full-length. Today, that album's title (Lurid Glow), release date (Mar. 31) and tracklist (below) were revealed.
