R.E.M.'s seminal 1991 album Out of Time led to an explosion in young people registering to vote, as Slate writers Whitney Jones and Roman Mars explained Friday.
"[N]o album has had as large an effect on politics in the United States as R.E.M.'s Out of Time," they wrote.
Best known for manning the boards at The Glow Recording Studio just outside of town, engineer Jesse Mangum (a finalist in this year's Flagpole Athens Music Awards, BTW) has announced the launch of a new, EP-only record label, MOEKE Records.
Below, you can hear the first taste of the imprint's output, a new tune from local pop group Brothers, a band we included in this week's list of AthFest picks:
Since the demise of Wu-obsessed local hip hop collective Mad Axes, its members have mostly lain low (the notable exception is Austin Darnell, who continues to ply his traditionalist trade with The Darnell Boys). But that doesn't mean they haven't been busy. Recently, chief MC Louie Larceny let it slip to Flagpole that he has a debut solo full-length in the works.
The new stuff is "the dopest material I have ever touched," he says, adding:
This will be a full length album. I am recording it all with Joel Hatstat. Joel is also dropping sonic working-man's-gems all over the record. The album will have many special guests. Along with Jordan, and Joel, guests will include: Ruby the Rabbitfoot, long time Deaf Judge yoga veteran Cubenza, the artist formerly known as "So-Hi", San Francisco based multi-media-artist Mr. Fish and many more… I have been talking with a few former members of Dark Meat (Athens) and Lee Harvey Oswald (Atlanta) to capture some pagan energy on the tape too.
Check out the album trailer below. The clip features a snippet of a tune reportedly titled "White Money," with a beat provided by Jordan Scott of defunct grindcore outfit (and NPR faves) Gripe.
What is this, reunion day?
Townies of a certain age and proclivity for party music will be thrilled to hear that I Am the World Trade Center, the collaborative project of producer Dan Geller (who DJs around town under the name Twin Powers) and vocalist Amy Dykes, will reconvene for a show at this year's AthFest.
IATWTC—which had a brief brush with notoriety after the 9/11 attacks and apparently continues to inspire discussion among conspiracy-theory wingnuts—released three albums of dreamy, danceable synth-pop before calling it quits in the mid-aughts. The band will get back together for a show Saturday, June 21 at the Georgia Theatre (other acts on the bill are upstart synth kidz Programs and hip hop oddballs Turquoise Jeep).

The second wave of AthFest artist announcements went out today, following the revelationat the beginning of this month that Reptar, Kishi Bashi and Drivin' N Cryin' would headline the festival's outdoor stage and Futurebirds would play Saturday, June 21 at the 40 Watt Club.
In addition to those acts, Elf Power, Dead Confederate, New Madrid, Radiolucent, Seven Handle Circus, Family and Friends, Judah & The Lion, Roadkill Ghost Choir, Ike Stubblefield, David Barbe & The Quick Hooks, The Woodgrains and Brothers will all perform during the fest, which happens June 18–22.

The lineup and tracklist for the 2014 AthFest compilation album, which we previously reported will be pressed to vinyl for the first time in the history of the series, has been set, and Flagpole's got the scoop.
Given the obvious space restrictions of a vinyl record, it makes sense that the tracklist is down to 10 from last year's 16; more surprising, though, is that this year's edition—designed, per the press release, as a "cohesive rock collection"—is nearly devoid of AthFest-exclusive cuts.
Still, it's undoubtedly a solid list of songs. Along with cuts from New Madrid, Ruby the RabbitFoot, Family and Friends, Faster Circuits, Shade, Elf Power, Cicada Rhythm, Ghost Owl and Nicholas Mallis, the comp features "Rock Solid," a tune from Drive-By Truckers' recent digital-only Dragon Pants EP (a companion to the band's most recent full-length, English Oceans).
The album will officially be released June 17 via Ghostmeat, the local label that is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Online pre-sales start Apr. 15 at the AthFest site.

In addition to the R.E.M. "Unplugged" 4-LP set we told you about the other day, two other well-known Athens groups will release exclusive, limited-edition vinyl for Record Store Day, which is Saturday, Apr. 19.
Info after the jump.
In honor of Record Store Day, the now annual event whose 2014 incarnation takes place Saturday, Apr. 19, R.E.M. has announced it will release a limited edition, four-LP collection titled Unplugged: The Complete 1991 And 2001 Sessions. As the title implies, the set will compile both of the band's appearances on MTV's once-essential "Unplugged" series.
The two performances are separated by 10 years (as the press release notes, R.E.M. was the only act to ever headline the program twice). The first, from 1991, is heavy on material from the then-new Out of Time; the other, from 2001, aired soon after the release of the still-underrated Reveal.

The deadline to apply for a spot on the annual AthFest compilation is fast approaching. If you want that totally brilliant, universe-altering, hands-down no-question GOAT tune you've been sitting on for months to appear on the album, you'd better submit it here by Sunday, Mar. 16.

Incredibly cool news this week as local musician and master luthier Scott Baxendale, who runs Baxendale Guitar and also operates the Athens Luthier Academy for aspiring guitar-makers, has been commissioned to restore Elvis Presley's guitar collection, which is housed up at Graceland. (There he is above, holding the King's 1956 Gibson J-200.)
More details—including another bit of cool news for Baxendale—after the jump.
