It’s not unfathomable that a currently inactive band like Centro-matic can have its legacy positively—and constantly—reconfigured in our digital age. Thanks to recently tweeted endorsements from artists like Jason Isbell, the indie darlings from Denton, TX are experiencing something of a renaissance, despite disbanding in 2014. Frontman Will Johnson is keeping his former band’s brand of rock and roll abstraction alive through contemplative solo releases and incessant touring. Johnson takes a break from an Undertow Music-endorsed living room jaunt around the U.S. to perform at Normaltown Hall on Sunday, Oct. 9.

In the Loop: Weekend Events: Black Lives Matter and Local Food Rallies, Terrapin's Hop Harvest

A vigil for Eric Garner and Michael Brown, black men killed by police, December 2014 at the Arch.

The Athens NAACP and Athens for Everyone will have a vigil for the two latest black men shot and killed by police, Terence Crutcher and Keith Lamont Scott, tonight starting at 7 p.m. at the Arch.

An Oklahoma officer shot and killed Crutcher, who was unarmed and had his hands raised, after his car broke down in the middle of the road. Scott’s death sparked three days of protests and clashes with police in Charlotte.

Organizers will also be collected signatures on a petition in favor of a local civil rights committee.

Tomorrow night (Saturday, Sept. 17, starting at 7 p.m.), Hendershots, in the Bottleworks on Prince, is hosting a food/music/drink/fashion thingie called The Experience. The coffee bar/bar bar will provide drinks, Monsoon is playing music, and designer Kristen Stanfill will feature her clothes.

But what we're concerned with here is the food. It's being supplied by an LLC called Springhouse, registered in Augusta, that specializes in these kinds of events, and the menu looks appropriately interesting: sorghum caramel corn, fancy roasted vegetable tacos, chicken satay, a take on banana pudding, things like that. Tickets are $35 including online convenience fee and can be purchased from athensmusic.net.

Independent bookstore Avid Bookshop—which celebrates its fifth anniversary next month—is opening a second location in Five Points, in addition to its Prince Avenue store.
