A onetime fixture on the Athens scene, Lera Lynn left town several years ago to pursue opportunities elsewhere. It’d be hard to argue that it hasn’t paid off. After connecting with Americana guru T-Bone Burnett, Lynn found herself acting on season two of “True Detective,” playing a unnamed bar singer opposite superstars Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell. Several of her songs were also featured on the HBO show’s soundtrack. This month, she’ll release her fourth studio album, Resistor. She returns to Athens Wednesday, when she’ll headline the Georgia Theatre.

  • In the Loop: Weigh In on Closing Newton, Chase Street Bike Lanes

Since the Athens-Clarke County Transportation and Public Works Department, at the Bottleworks owners’ urging, reversed a one-way block of Newton Street from northbound to southbound in 2013, the number of crashes there has risen by 40 percent.

It’s a small number—only three per year, on average, according to TPW Director David Clark. Most of those crashes involve people waiting to turn left from Prince Avenue onto Newton and getting rear-ended, he said.

TPW is floating a plan to close the block of Newton between Taziki’s and The Grit to create an outdoor cafe (along with three on-street parking spaces and enough room for emergency vehicles). The idea came from UGA professor Jack Crowley’s downtown master plan.

    Mark Linkous

Few artists maintain the kind of haunting mystery after their passing like Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous. Much like Athens’ Vic Chesnutt, Linkous suffered bouts of severe depression and paralysis before committing suicide in 2010. To celebrate Linkous’ life, British filmmakers Bobby Dass and Alex Crowton directed The Sad and Beautiful World of Sparklehorsewhich screens at the 40 Watt on Tuesday.

Flagpole caught up with the filmmakers and Angela-Faye Martin, a singer-songwriter with close ties to Linkous, to discuss the film and Sparklehorse’s legacy.

  • Grub Notes: Cosmik Debris Is Back and More Beer News

    CCBC_CosmikDebris_0023[4].jpg

For the first time, Creature Comforts' double IPA, Cosmik Debris, will be for sale in stores and at bars in cans as well as on draft later this month.

Cosmic Debris clocks in at 8% ABV and features Simcoe, Idaho 7, Mosaic, Cascade and Eureka hops, but it doesn’t come close to the tongue-numbing bitterness of a lot of double IPAs; instead, it’s citrus-y with toned-down pine and a solid malt backbone. It's a seasonal release, so pick some up as soon as you can—and make sure it's fresh.

Artist James Barsness will be signing the cans he designed at a launch party Wednesday from 5–7 p.m. at the brewery.
