Food Network mainstay Alton Brown is kicking off his "Edible Inevitable Tour" live show Tuesday at the Classic Center here in Athens (home of his alma mater, the University of Georgia).
Brown told Flagpole last month that he's looking forward to "getting re-acquainted with the place." So where's he been eating? Let's check Twitter to find out.

Thanks to the Neighborhood Notification Initiative, it was brought to my attention that Daniel Epting, of Epting Events, was looking at modifying a space in the Chase Park Warehouses, on Tracy Street. Could it be a restaurant? Nah, it's an event rental space, but it has some interesting aspects that could affect the food scene in Athens.
Daniel was kind enough to walk me around the space yesterday as well as give me a tour of the Epting facility around the corner on Chase Street, by the Loop. The former tuxedo factory seems, for now, to have enough room to grow, but Epting is an ambitious company. No fools, they kept bolts and bolts of fabric, plus an unfinished sewing room that could end up being a good opportunity for Athens' small but blossoming fashion scene.
Last month, we brought you news of a Kickstarter campaign from local band Sad Dads, which offered a slew of unorthodox rewards to those who donated, including, at the $25 level, the ability to force bassist Michael Jefts to eat an entire raw onion.
Not only did the band meet its $500 goal, it exceeded it by $100—and the final onion tally sat at 13.
Not only is Big Family Cafe, in Homewood Village, still open, despite being one of Athens' best-kept secrets, but it's recently expanded its hours to offer dinner until 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It also now serves bottled beer, sangria and mimosas. Woop!
South Kitchen + Bar, in the Georgian, downtown, is also adding hours, though in the other direction, instituting lunch as of Aug. 11 (Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m.–4 p.m.) with options like a fried green tomato BLT, a BBQ chicken sandwich, a cheeseburger, a grilled veggie sandwich, soups and salads. It's also adding Wednesday night "Date Nights," where you get an appetizer, two salads, two entrees and a bottle of wine for $40.

It seemed like we took a little breather in June from the cavalcade of food events, but now they're ramping up again. Here's some of what's coming up over the next month:
Is your sauce the boss? The second annual Classic City BBQ Festival is now taking applications.
The festival, which drew 4,000 people last year, will be held Aug. 15–16 at the Classic Center and will feature barbecue contests, barbecue restaurant vendors, outdoor music, a classic car show and a tailgating trade show.
Athens is the best foodie city for groups in the Southeast, according to an online poll ofConventionSouth magazine readers.
The Athens branch of Brixx Wood Fired Pizza, a Charlotte-based chain that will be opening in the West Washington Street parking deck downtown, is slated to start doing business Monday, Mar. 17 (probably). It also has its own Facebook page, distinct from the corporate one.
Spring break always means a super-quiet Athens, which means it's a good opportunity for restaurants to do some spring cleaning, close for a day or two or just cut back hours for the week. Here's what's going on that we know of:
