Grub Notes: Photo Gallery: The West Broad Market Garden

The West Broad Market Garden opened for the season on Saturday.

It's the market's third year, and possibly its last. The community garden on the vacant West Broad School property is a partnership between the Athens Land Trust and the Clarke County School District, but as CCSD plans to renovate the vacant school into administration offices, officials are considering paving over the garden for employee parking and moving the garden to a much smaller lot nearby, leaving the future of the garden unclear.

Starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, Apr. 27), kind of like the title cards that start off each episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," the Jittery Joe's Roaster on Barber Street will host a food truck/art festival in its parking lot, until 7:30 p.m.

Last year, Athenian Rebecca Lang had a book out about fried chicken. (Read our feature on Lang from May 2015.) This year, she's done a 180 and is taking on veggies, in The Southern Vegetable Cookbook: A Root-to-Stalk Guide to the South's Favorite Produce, put out bySouthern Living. Divided into the four seasons, the book is accessible, beautifully photographed and full of nice tips (e.g., how best to preserve excess from your garden, how to make a corn broth with leftover cobs, celery leaves can add good flavor to salads).

If you're part of an audience that, while watching Stephen Sondheim's musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," about the Victorian fictional character who turned his murder victims into meat pies, found yourself wondering what those pies would taste like, then you are a sick person. You'll also find your curiosity satisfied starting tomorrow evening, when the UGA Department of Drama and Theatre, which is presenting the musical April 14–24, has an open cast party at 7 p.m. at Pouch downtown.

Grub Notes: Square One Is Closing; 180°F Cafe Is Open; More Food News

Open since 2009, Square One Fish Co. will do its last day of business in its current location on Sunday. Owners Erica and Joe Cascio have sold the building to a hotel that will open next to the Classic Center, something meeting planners have desired for a long time.

Also closed are the Hawthorne Avenue location of Dickey's Barbecue Pit (the Oconee location remains open) and Always Baked on Baxter Street.

Casa de Amistad will hold its Mojito Fest fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. at Broad 9A, in the Chase Street Warehouses. Local bars and restaurants will compete against one another to mix the best mojito. Attendees get to judge. Tickets are $25 (if you drink mojitos) or $10 (if you don't) and can be purchased on the website dedicated to the event. DJ YaTuSabes will provide music. All proceeds go to Amistad, which provides various and much-needed resources to the Hispanic community in Athens.
