In OH MY GAW THE INTERNET IS FREAKING news, Neutral Milk Hotel will reconvene to play a series of live shows later this year. This is cool. The good news for Athens? Two of those shows will happen at the 40 Watt Club, on Tuesday, Oct. 22 and Wednesday, Oct. 23.
We've told you about a lot of the bands that will be playing AthFest. Now, we're proud to announce the lineup for Flagpole's official two-night showcase at the Georgia Theatre.
AthFest has announced a new slew of bands set to perform at the three-day festival this June, to add to the first wave of artists, which we revealed a couple weeks ago.
Do you prefer to eat your food on the street or in otherwise nontraditional contexts? Well, spring in the Athens area is all about that, too. Here are some of the upcoming events that offer you that opportunity:
In last week's Art Notes, we told you about My_Athens, the Instagram-based art show that's taking over the Bottleworks gallery all April long. This Friday, Apr. 12, Paste Magazine will present a musical showcase featuring locals Easter Island and T. Hardy Morris. Pretty cool, I guess. But the real throwdown will happen the next Friday, Apr. 19, when Flagpole presents performances by Dream Boat and Outer Spaces.
AthFest, the local music and arts festival that is the yearly centerpiece of the AthFest Educates! nonprofit foundation, has announced the first wave of performing artists for 2013.
If you’ve never seen the film version of Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes, go rent it and watch it. Right now. I’ll wait. Okay, now that you’re back, that scene where the entire town is galvanized by the approach of the train bringing the dark carnival into their midst?
That’s what you’re feeling right now as Athens’ own phantasmagoria returns to town to barter for your soul. After a year’s hiatus, Mr. Blank’s Carnivale of Black Hearts is back with old favorites and some new blood in a show they’re calling “The Fool’s Revival.”
Live Nation has announced that it will release an unspecified number of additional tickets to the Jason Aldean show at Sanford Stadium, which happens Saturday, Apr. 13. The concert, which also features country stars Luke Bryan, Jake Owen and Thomas Rhett, will be the first ever held between the hedges, and a whopping 60,000 people have already purchased tickets.
Today the Georgia Theatre announced a slate of upcoming spring shows, and there are some good ones: DJ Shadow will perform later this month (Mar. 27; enterprising local producer Murk Daddy Flex will open) and underrated Three 6 Mafia mastermind/weirdly normal person Juicy J will grace the stage on May 1. (Also: the godly Yo La Tengo on Apr. 29., a bit of news that flew weirdly under the radar.)
But perhaps the most exciting part of the announcement was that two of Atlanta's finest, Big Boi and Killer Mike, will co-headline a show on Thursday, Apr. 18. Both rappers are no strangers to Athens, having performed here separately in the past year. But the two of them together on one bill? Forget it. Show of the year.
