So, the Orange Twin Conservation Community was all set to host its anticipated annual concert—this year featuring the Athens Cowboy Choir, the Shoal Creek Stranglers, The Darnell Boys, Art Rosenbaum and the Orange Twin Family band—and then this happened. Due to the entirely credible threat of terrible, horrible, no good, very bad weather, the show has been moved into town.
Local activists are hard at work organizing last minute opposition to the downtown Selig development based on former commissioner Carl Jordan's revelations about an old rail spur through the Armstrong & Dobbs property. But it looks like the Athens-Clarke County Commission is moving full speed ahead on rubber-stamping the development Tuesday night.
The Classic Center sent Flagpole an announcement this morning that beloved fake newspaper The Onion was bringing some kind of show to Athens Oct. 6.
Do you like to shop at grocery stores that are visible from space? Well, you're in luck. Kroger is building gigantic new stores all over Athens.
Kroger has already expanded its Alps Road store and is building a new 123,000 square foot store on Highway 29 near Madison County. Now, it's filed plans to replace its store at the corner of Barnett Shoals and College Station roads with one that's twice as large.
Got computer skills and want to use them for the common good? Check out Hack for Athens this weekend.
The event is part of the National Day of Civic Hacking, an Obama Administration-backed event where software engineers, software designers, entrepreneurs, educators, artists, scientists and others will collaborate to produce open source solutions to public problems.
The space formerly known as Athena Jewelers, at 228 E. Clayton, popped up recently in a Neighborhood Notification Initiative email as being subject to plans review for a renovation to house Insomnia Cookies. It turns out Insomnia is a college-town-based chain that does pretty much the same thing as local fellas Always Baked Cookies, around the corner on Jackson Street, sharing space and initials with Athens Bagel Co., i.e., late-night cookie baking and delivery. Apparently the sentiment "I'm drunk/whatever and it's 2 a.m. and I really want cookies" is more common than I realized. Are late-night cookie-delivery places the next frogurt?
If you've been wondering what might take over the space at Prince and Satula vacated by Honey B's, you may well have noticed a new sign appear on the building's exterior for Journey Juice. It's not open yet, but if all goes well (note: If you know anything about opening a business, you know it rarely does), the cold-pressed juicery should be open in about two weeks.
From Sept. 5-7, the Hopscotch Music Festival will take over downtown Raleigh, NC and feature an impressive list of performers, from Big Boi, The Breeders and Spiritualized to Merzbow, Angel Olsen and Waxahatchee. In advance of the fest, organizers have scheduled a run of "road shows," concerts set across the South and featuring North Carolina-based bands.
On Saturday, June 1, the 40 Watt Club will host a Hopscotch Road Show featuring NC groups Floating Action, Toddlers and Lonnie Walker. Local punks Muuy Biien will rep the home state, as will upstart hip hop producer murk daddy flex, the multiple Flagpole Award nominee who's also playing Flagpole's AthFest showcase, and DJ Daffy Duck.
Find more details on the Hopscotch site.
Neutral Milk Hotel's two upcoming full-band shows at the 40 Watt, which will take place Oct. 22 and 23 of this year, went on sale at 10 a.m. this morning, and… yeah.
The Sudz laundry at 396 Baxter St., with a primo location right across from UGA's dorms, has sat empty for a while now. When the Butt Hutt was up the street a bit, next to Jimbo's convenience store, its original plan was to renovate the building and move in, but that kept getting delayed and then Jot 'Em Down closed on Macon Highway, providing an easier and more suitable new home.
From what I understood, the plan was still for Butt Hutt to take over the Sudz building eventually, but now that seems to be over and done with and, instead, franchise Groucho's Deli is taking the space.
