The Athens Housing Authority and its partner, private developer Columbia Residential, started tearing down Jack R. Wells Homes off Hawthorne Avenue on Wednesday to make way for mixed-income apartments and townhouses.
For the next six to eight weeks, workers will be repaving almost five miles of West Broad Street, Oconee Street, Oak Street and Lexington Road, aka U.S. Highway 78 and State Route 10.

The Athens Area Arts Council will host a special seminar, "Taxes 101 for Artists," to help people with creative careers better prepare for tax season. The lunchtime learning session—set for 12–1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17 at the Lyndon House Arts Center—features Michelle Griffith of Little House Accounting, who will explore common issues related to freelance and artistic professions like which deductions to take and how to keep track of expenses.
Packed lunches are welcome, or $10 meals can be ordered in advance from Pulaski Heights BBQ and delivered to the event. The session is free for AAAC members and $10 for non-members, and the cost of the session can be applied toward a $25 membership. If Mike Mills can do it, I reckon Peter Buck can too. The 40 Watt Club has announced that on Thursday, Nov. 14, the R.E.M. six-stringer will perform solo alongside Drivin' N' Cryin' axeman Kevn Kinney and his Roamin' Countrymen band. The concert is being billed as a "Special Community Show."
Cine’s Summer Classic Movie Series features the best of classic film—all on 35mm prints. The series kicks off on Thursday, June 11 with Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Conner starring in Singin’ in the Rain. A pre-screening reception at 7 p.m. includes desserts from The National and a tap dancing demonstration by The Studio Dance Academy.
