As usual, the Tate Student Center Theater's fall movie lineup is a mix of classics like Nashville and recent hits like Iron Man 3.
Rocket Salon on Jackson Street downtown is closing up shop at the end of August and moving to Normaltown, owner Amber Hilton told Flagpole.
The new store will be at 4125 Atlanta Highway, a building between Commerce Boulevard and Athens Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram formerly occupied by AT&T and Lowe's. Starting Aug. 20 (Habitat's 25th anniversary), it will open Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
The storefront on the northwest corner of Clayton Street and College Avenue downtown was once home to Wuxtry Records, until the record store moved into the larger space next door in 1989. Most recently, the former location served as an eat-in area for Ike and Jane's nearby stand. Now, Wuxtry is again reclaiming the teensy space (the store housed its used-CD selection there for a brief stint), reopening it as a spot to buy bargain-priced used vinyl.

The Spectacular Now, which opens today in L.A. and New York, is not Athens native James Ponsoldt's first feature-length film (it's his third, following 2006's Off the Black and last year's Smashed) but it's by far his most personal. Set in Ponsoldt's hometown, and shot here last summer, the movie documents a budding high-school relationship. But it's no breezy teen rom-com, having already earned rave reviews from outlets like The New Yorker.
In hopes of expanding after the inaugural festival last year, the Athens Slingshot festival is applying for a $15,000 state economic development grant.
After winning big at Sundance earlier this year, Athens native James Ponsoldt's coming-of-age tale The Spectacular Now is set to open in Los Angeles and New York City this Friday.
Shot entirely in Athens, the movie stars Shailene Woodley (The Descendents) and Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights"), among others, and tells the story of an improbable teen romance. The film is already garnering rave reviews from influential critics, like New York Magazine's David Edelstein and The New Yorker's David Denby.
Avid Bookshop continues to program a robust schedule of food-related events, with several in the near future. Tomorrow (Saturday) at Athens Farmers Market (AFM), Kevin West, author of "Saving the Season: A Cook's Guide to Home Canning, Pickling, and Preserving," will be on hand to do a demo. West's blog should give you a nice overview of his mad skillz with preserving fresh produce.
The application period for AthFest Educates mini-grants for music and arts starts Thursday, Aug. 1 and runs through Friday, Aug. 9.
