Consider the college football hype video.

Designed to get crowds pumped up for a big home game, and released weeks in advance of said game in order to maximize the potential for Internet virality, it is often short, crisply shot, with a soul-stirring soundtrack.

  • Homedrone: Watch an Epic New Dictator Video

Classic City MC Travis "Dictator" West's 2013 Circus EP was one of the more memorable local hip hop efforts in recent years, an ornate, nine-song collection of steel-edged street-rap. Now West has teamed with Atlanta-based production team Krewsade Films for an epic, nine-minute video for "Watered Down," Circus' sleek closing track.

See part one here, and part two here.

Anthony Little believes in a thing called love.

In the final installment of this three-part series, Little, aka Versatyle Tha Wildchyld, delves into his definition of what family means to him—and how the Wild Wolf Pack, his hip hop group consisting of young, multicultural lyricists and rappers, is a part of that extended family. "Blood doesn't make us family," Little says. "Loyalty makes us family."

  • Homedrone: Flagpole Premieres: Tunabunny, 'Airless Spaces' Video

    tunabunny.jpg

Eccentric and prolific local rock group Tunabunny is reportedly prepping yet another new LP, titled PCP Presents Alice in Wonderland Jr., the follow-up to March's weird and lovely Kingdom Technology. But while they're at it, they're still churning out visual accompaniments to tracks from the last release.

Today, we're happy to premiere one such project, the video for Kingdom Technology's ethereal opening track, "Airless Spaces." The clip, which features a first-person journey through a strip mall, is as formless and yet arresting as the band's music.

  • Homedrone: Flagpole Premieres: Powerkompany, 'Mermaid (Sunlight)' Video

    pk wall.jpg

Local hubby-and-wife electro-pop duo Powerkompany haven't released a proper album since dropping the bold and moody I Am More Than This in May 2013, but that doesn't mean the pair haven't stayed busy touring, writing, recording and, most recently, making music videos.

This summer, they released a lovely clip for I Am More Than This' "Lost," and today Flagpole is happy to premiere the comparatively creepy video (Halloween, y'all!) for that record's closer, "Mermaid (Sunlight)".

    Watch part one here.

Anthony Little, aka Versatyle tha Wildchyld, likes to keep things close. "I stick with my family," Little says. "The people that I trust… At the end of the day, I'm going to stay that way."

Part two of this three-part series explores Little's formative years until present day, starting with how he met local hip hop aficionado Montu Miller, one of the founding members of a community-based social group called Dreaded Mindz, where Little honed his musical career and community values. Little broke off from Dreaded Mindz and linked up with Matt McClure, from McClure Entertainment Group. And Miller created a separate group, AthFactor Entertainment, while Dreaded Mindz, or DMZ, has taken the back burner.

Little also talks about more recent ventures, like creating his Georgia Bulldogs anthem, "Southern Flavor," produced by McClure Entertainment Group in September 2013.

  • Homedrone: Video: In the Studio with Versatyle tha Wildchyld

    Versatyle-tha-Wildchyld-1024x682.jpg

Overshadowed by the South’s rap capital, roughly 60 miles east of Atlanta, the artists of the Athens hip hop scene often struggle to let their voices be heard. For many, it’s a daily battle of lyric and beat. Quite often, local hip hop takes a backseat to the mainstream artists who stroll through town, leaving each Athens rapper grabbing for scraps, trying to find their musical seat.

For act one of a three-part series showcasing local artist Anthony Little, aka Versatyle tha Wildchyld, Flagpole dropped by the home studio of Athens sound engineer and music producer Joel Hatstat, as the two joined forces to create some new tracks. Versatyle sheds light on the origin of his song “Grinding and Shining,” as well as his newest single, “When I Write.”

More work than play when recording, Little says, “When I’m in the studio—that’s my money.”

  • Homedrone: Flagpole Premieres: Hand Sand Hands, 'Pores' Video

    good luck cover.jpg

We've been fans of local experimental rhythmsmith Jonathan Miller and his Hand Sand Hands project since Miller emigrated from the Twin Cities to Athens in 2012. Attendees at this summer's Flagpole Athens Music Awards got a taste of HSH's upcoming album, Good Luck With That, which now has a release date: Nov. 11, when you can grab the album on cassette via Arrowhawk and digitally via Autumn + Colour.

The album—there's the cover art above—features contributions from bassist Taylor Chmura and drummer Chase Merritt (both of Little Gold), who lend the music a live, full-band feel, though it loses none of HSH's sample-based strangeness.

Below, check out a video for "Pores," the record's strong lead single, filmed by the increasingly in-demand Dominar, LTD.

Honeychild is gearing up to release Surrender, the pop follow-up to the tropical American Beach (Flagpole review). An Indiegogo campaign has been in the works for a while, and though the group has thus far raised less than half of the desired $8,000, there's still another week-plus for folks to donate.

And the band is making it easy to do so: At Honeychild's show Saturday, Oct. 18 atHendershot's—where they'll play the new record in its entirety—frontlady SJ Ursrey tellsFlagpole she will have a laptop set up where folks can pre-order the album through the Indiegogo page.
