Athens native Tituss Burgess, star of Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” had some harsh words for his home state during an appearance on “The Late Show” Friday.
The Emmy-nominated actor, who graduated from Cedar Shoals High School and the University of Georgia, told host Stephen Colbert that he wants to give a commencement speech at UGA. The hypothetical speech, he said, would take aim at student apathy and the “religious liberty” bill passed by the state legislature but vetoed by Gov. Nathan Deal last month. He gave Colbert's audience a preview:
Videographer Jake McLaren captured some of the highlights of last weekend's Slingshot Festival. Check out the clip below:
Flagpole favorites Dead Neighbors are still riding high on the strength of last year's excellent self-titled cassette (which landed at No. 6 on our best-of-2015 list). Today we're pleased to premiere the music video for "Tell," one of the record's standout tunes.
Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe—who appears to be modeling his look after Luke in The Force Awakens these days—performed a spare, piano-driven rendition of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World” on “The Tonight Show” last night.
Athens pop-punk miscreants Meth Wax have just released their self-titled debut, a 12-track burner that you should really go check out, now.
Good. Now that you're back, how about taking a look at the brand new video for "Goodbye," the album's closing track?
After a substantial hiatus, local three-piece street-punk outfit The Rodney Kings has returned with a new EP, Friday Night With… The Rodney Kings, two songs from which you can currently stream on Bandcamp. The band plans to release the second half of the EP later this month.
Below, check out a video for one of the new tracks, "Black Out." The clip stars the band's three members, as well as a certain Athens-based alternative weekly that continues to defy all odds by thriving in the midst of a frankly terrifying print-media landscape.
Patrick Brick, the songwriter behind Athens-based one-man electro-pop project Futo, is prepping a new LP, Futo's Greatest Hits. The follow-up to last year's Flagpole fave I Wish I Had Been Born as the Rain That Forms Rivers That Carve Out Canyons will drop Apr. 20.
Athens rock foursome New Madrid are prepping a new full-length, magnetkingmagnetqueen, which'll drop Apr. 29 via local imprint Normaltown Records. The follow-up to 2014'sSunswimmer looks to expand on that record's subtle psychedelic edge, and new song "Knots" hammers the point home with effects-laden guitar work and a spaced-out vocal delivery from singer Phil McGill.
In 2014, Pylon leader Vanessa Briscoe Hay got the idea to assemble a crack cast of Athens musicians to pay tribute to the music of her legendary new wave band. The group, dubbed the Pylon Reenactment Society, played once that year as part of the inaugural Art Rocks Athens event, then again for the 2015 edition.
Now the band—Jason NeSmith, Kay Stanton, Damon Denton, Joe Rowe and Hay—is embarking on a mini-tour alongside E6 associates Dressy Bessy. The two groups will play the 40 Watt this Saturday, Feb. 20. (Check out this week's feature on the PRS here.)
Today we're pleased to premiere the live video for "Beep," filmed at last year's ARA. Check out the clip, produced by the Art Rocks Athens Foundation, below:
Forget A Very Murray Christmas: This year's No. 1 all-star holiday special comes courtesy of Athens jokesters Sad Dads, who have previously filmed themselves eating a buch of raw onions and whose music Flagpole's usually unflappable Gordon Lamb has gone on recordsaying he "can't muster the patience or stomach to deal with."
