Athens garage-punk group Kwazymoto has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on a new full-length titled Limerance Land—the successor to last year's On Mount Rennie—which it plans to release Friday, Oct. 13.
Folk trio Cicada Rhythm has been a Flagpole fave since the then-duo of Andrea DeMarcus and Dave Kirslis moved to Athens in 2013. In 2015, the group released its official debut via Normaltown Records. Since then, the band's been gigging steadily and working on new material.

The fifth annual Chess and Community conference Saturday at the Georgia Center featured entrepreneur Beau Shell (the Lil' Ice Cream Dude), journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault (who integrated the University of Georgia) and a tournament between the Classic City Knights youth chess team and local police officers.
Here's a video by Flagpole senior staff photographer Joshua L. Jones featuring Chess and Community founder Lemuel "Life the Griot" LaRoche.
United Group of Artists successfully put on their fifth annual Athens Hip Hop Awards on Sunday, Mar. 26. Mokah and Knowa Johnson have worked since moving to Athens five years ago to begin and maintain the AHHA, sometimes against resistance.
The University of Georgia's independently organized version of the famed TED Talks is happening from 1–5 p.m. today, and they'll be streamed on Facebook Live so you can avoid work and watch from the comfort of your own office.
Check out the list of presenters—all UGA students and alumni—here. We're proud to say they include Flagpole contributor Carolyn Crist, who's also an adjunct professor at the Grady College of Journalism and co-owner of printing company Pixel & Ink.

It's that time of year again: Pollen is filling our noses, spring is in the air, and the Georgia legislature is trying to pass another campus carry bill.
A group of over 200 students and other protesters gathered in front of the UGA Arch Tuesday afternoon, chanting, “Hey hey, ho ho, campus carry has got to go,” and holding signs.
Speakers included professors, students and survivors of the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007.
“The majority of UGA feels that this bill will make our campus less safe,” said student Mallory Harris, who organized the protest.
Inspired in part by the Postmodern Jukebox project, local hard-rock trio Liberator has launched a series of videos dubbed Liberator Presents, in which the band teams with other members of the Athens music community to cover classics and deep cuts from their favorite artists.

On last night's "The Late Show," Michael Stipe joined host Stephen Colbert for a rendition of the R.E.M. classic "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." Sort of, anyway.
While 2016 may have seemed like the end of the world, Colbert changed the lyrics to "It's the End of the Year as We Know It," rattling off a list of 2016's notable (and mostly depressing) happenings, from Putin's election hack to Harambe, as a disgusted-looking Stipe—still sporting his Santa Claus beard—looks on.
When Athens arts icon Jeremy Ayers died in October, it inspired an outpouring of tributes and remembrances from his friends, who described his kindness, generosity and abiding love of both people and the natural world.
Last month, a memorial for Ayers took place at the Morton Theatre downtown, where friends and family gathered to celebrate his life.

Georgia-based sketch comedy duo Home Brewed humor took to the streets of downtown Athens last weekend to interview drunk Auburn and Georgia fans about Donald Trump's win.
The results were predictable but will nonetheless make you despair for your city, your school and (possibly) your race. Warning: Language is NSFW.
