For the new episode of Behind the Scene, Dave Kirslis and Andrea DeMarcus of local Americana duo par excellence Cicada Rhythm joined Flagpole's film squad for a very special Valentine's Day game. Longtime partners who are recently married, Kirslis and DeMarcus showed off just how well they know one another by answering a series of personal questions, then guessing the other's response.
To kick off our reboot of Flagpole's Athens-music video series Behind the Scene, we invited local hip-hop phenom and newly elected Athens-Clarke County Commissioner Mariah Parker, aka Linqua Franqa, to join us for a very special holiday episode.
A highlight of Athens' holiday season, the Downtown Parade of Lights returned Thursday, Dec. 6, featuring an impressive selection of festive floats (though, sadly, Rotisserie Jesus was nowhere to be found).
As the leader of Athens band Kenosha Kid, guitarist Dan Nettles has spent well over a decade exploring the cosmic intersection of jazz, post-rock, jam and improv composition. Despite the headiness of Nettles and crew's approach, the results are eminently approachable and frequently thrilling, as on last year's smoky, funky Outside Choices.
Republican Brad Raffensperger was a no-show for an Atlanta Press Club debate with Democrat John Barrow for the runoff for secretary of state.
The debate aired Tuesday on Georgia Public Broadcasting. Raffensperger claimed he had a scheduling conflict, but the press club said it had been trying to negotiate a date and time for almost three weeks.
His absence allowed Barrow—a former congressman and Harvard Law graduate—to run roughshod over an empty podium as he contrasted himself with both Raffensperger and Gov.-elect Brian Kemp, who was widely criticized for voter suppression as secretary of state while overseeing his own election.

Athens is a city filled with music—but it’s also, of course, the home of the defending SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs football team, which heads to Jacksonville for its annual battle with Florida this Saturday.

Local act Kwazymoto is one of the most musically and conceptually ambitious bands in town, as proven by last year's Limerence Land, a five-song stunner that found the group pushing the boundaries of punk. Now, Kwazymoto is set to return with a follow-up, My American Family, which it plans to drop Sept. 28, with an album-release show to follow Oct. 6 at the Caledonia Lounge.
