Athens-Clarke and Oconee County are neighbors, but they've been growing along two different paths ever since the University of Georgia was founded in the late 18th century. We take a look at their history, land area, population, economic growth and school systems to get a better idea of how much they differ.

The Athens-Clarke County Democratic Committee hosted conversation with three U.S. Senate candidates—former 6th Congressional District candidate Jon Ossoff, former candidate for lieutenant governor Sarah Riggs Amico and Clarkston Mayor Ted Terry—on Nov. 11 at the Cotton Press. (A fourth candidate, former Columbus mayor Teresa Tomlinson, did not attend because of a scheduling conflict.) The winner of the May primary will face Republican Sen. David Perdue in November.
The Q&A sessions were moderated by state Reps. Spencer Frye (D-Athens) and Dar'shun Kendrick (D-Lithonia).

Athens singer-songwriter Sarah Zúñiga specializes in the sort of earnest, heart-tugging folk-pop that's made for mid-afternoon drives and sunny poolside hangs. Last year, she released a debut EP, Someday Soon, and now she's back with a lighthearted new single and accompanying video, which we're happy to premiere today.
Athens power-pop-punk trio Hunger Anthem has been quiet on the release front since dropping 2015's Cut the Chord EP, a five-song slice of hook-laden rock that "bursts with urgency and is packed with jaw-droppingly great tunefulness," per Flagpole scribe Gordon Lamb.
After forming at UGA in the late 1990s, Je Suis France established a reputation as Athens' go-to indie-rock party band, releasing a self-titled 2000 LP and 2003's terrific Fantastic Area—as well as a stream of exploratory CD-Rs that showcased the group's mischievous side—before its members scattered to various corners of the continent.
Led by former King of Prussia frontman Brandon Hanick, Athens "spirit-folk" recording project/supergroup Future Lives also features members of Drive-By Truckers and Velveteen Pink, as well as violinist Annie Leeth and pop songsmith Nicholas Mallis, among others.

Despite posting a $19.4 billion profit in 2018, AT&T is refusing to bargain with members of Communications Workers of America. The contract of AT&T technical and call center employees has expired, and now they’re on strike, asking to keep their current pay and benefits.
More than 20,000 AT&T workers have gone on strike across the Southeast over unfair labor practices and bad faith in contract negotiations. The strike started on Saturday and includes technicians and call center employees.

For awhile now, Chris Dowd, under the moniker Athens Politics Nerd, has been making videos recapping Athens-Clarke County Commission meetings and delving into policy topics like ambulance service, clean energy and affordable housing.
We're pleased to announce that Dowd is now partnering with Flagpole. We'll be posting his videos on our website—they're also available on YouTube and the Athens Politics nerd site—and Dowd will be contributing some city government coverage to the paper, as well.
The latest installment of Athens Politics Nerd covers SPLOST 2020, proposals to overhaul trash pickup in the formerly unincorporated parts of Athens, and two studies that recommend major transportation improvements for Lexington Road and Atlanta Highway.

Local songwriter Nicholas Mallis traffics in the sort of crisp, easy guitar-pop that can just as easily soundtrack a midday Hendershot's hang as a post-Go Bar A.M. comedown. Bright and tuneful but with enough existential angst to keep things from turning too florid, Mallis' music nods to his soft-rock forebears while remaining rooted in Classic City strange.
Athens singer-songwriter Cortez Garza plans to follow up his latest full-length, last year's reflective, revealing The Low Vibe, with a new EP next month. In the meantime, he's wrapping up a trilogy of videos for songs off the previous record by dropping a clip for The Low Vibe's twangy title track, which we're happy to premiere today.
